Root Down, Reorient, and Recalibrate

Trauma-informed therapy for deeper healing, embodied clarity, and meaningful change.  At Heart Rooted Counseling, healing is not about becoming someone different.  It is about becoming more deeply rooted in who you are.

In-person in Southwest Ohio + telehealth throughout Ohio

You don’t have to keep working so hard to manage what is asking to be healed.

There are times when insight alone isn’t enough.

You may understand why you feel the way you do, yet still find yourself caught in the same patterns—in relationships, in your emotions, in your body, or in the way you respond to stress.

At Heart Rooted Counseling, therapy goes beyond simply talking about what is happening.

Every relationship brings together two histories. Two nervous systems. Two sets of needs. Two ways of protecting. And sometimes two very different experiences of what is happening.

Couples therapy can help partners slow down the cycle, understand what is happening underneath the conflict, and create a different way of relating.

The same principle applies to families.

When we understand the pattern, we can begin to change the pattern.

Client Testimonials

  • In working with Julie I acquired a better quality of understanding of my trauma and how it affected my body mind and spirit. I worked with Julie for several months and in that time I was able to obtain a different thought pattern and recognize how I myself contributed to my pain. I cannot recommend Julie enough for anyone with deep rooted emotional trauma. She helped me save my life.
  • I highly recommend Julie to anyone who feels like they have tried traditional approaches but still feel stuck in certain patterns. She was instrumental in my healing journey, and I will always be grateful for the support, tools, and understanding she gave me along the way.
  • Julie is compassionate, knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely invested in the people she works with. She created a space where I felt safe enough to do difficult work while also learning that healing was possible.
  • Through neurofeedback, we worked on patterns that supported me in creating new pathways and responding differently to things that once felt automatic. The combination of these approaches was incredibly meaningful for me.
  • I came to realize that I needed more than simply talking through my experiences—I needed to learn how to work with the triggers and patterns that were happening within my nervous system. Julie helped me do that. Through EMDR, she helped me process experiences in a way that allowed me to move forward, while also teaching me practical tools to regulate my nervous system, challenge deeply rooted beliefs, strengthen my sense of agency, establish healthier boundaries, and reclaim my power.
  • Working with Julie has been one of the most impactful parts of my healing journey. She supported me for nearly six years through both EMDR and neurofeedback, and I am incredibly grateful for the role she played in helping me understand myself and heal in ways that traditional talk therapy alone could not.
  • Julie has helped me in the hardest times in my life and was a true sounding board. She has helped me developed emotionally, professionally and was always there to support me. I can’t thank her enough.
  • Ms. Baker-Nolan has helped me learn my worth in relationships. She has helped me learn boundaries in life. I am more confident in myself and abilities. In doing this work on myself, I have learned how I process emotions and how this in turn hinders my communication. I am working to keep communication a priority in all of my relationships and process my emotions instead of allowing them to build up. I appreciate Ms. Baker-Nolan’s honesty and allowing me to work through these attributes with her. I recommend Ms. Baker-Nolan for offering a no judgement, honest environment in which you…
  • Julie is highly compassionate, insightful, dedicated, and skilled in trauma work. She has had a tremendous impact on my growth and functioning in the short time that we have been working together. I wholeheartedly recommend her!
  • Julie really helped me work through a very difficult time in my life. Through DARTT therapy, she really helped me to find my own voice and create healthy boundaries. She didn’t tell me what to do when I needed to make a difficult decision, she helped me learn to trust myself enough to make the decision on my own. Julie truly is a blessing and wonderful therapist.

Depth-Oriented Care

Healing that goes deeper than simply managing what is difficult.

I want to help you find relief from what feels difficult right now while also creating the conditions for lasting change.

Together, we look beneath the surface at the patterns, experiences, relationships, and adaptations that may be shaping the way you move through life.

This work is about more than learning to cope.

It is about developing a deeper understanding of yourself, becoming more connected to what matters to you, and discovering new ways of responding—with greater flexibility, clarity, and authenticity.

Integrative Treatment

Because you are more than your symptoms.

Mental health does not exist separately from the body, relationships, nervous system, or the experiences that have shaped you.

Therapy at Heart Rooted Counseling is individualized to the person, couple, child, or family sitting in front of me.

Depending on your needs, our work may include psychotherapy, trauma therapy, neurofeedback, addiction therapy, self-care coaching, and brain- and body-based approaches such as EMDR, DARTT/HOCI, Neurofeedback and Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR).

Rather than fitting you into a particular approach, I draw from these therapies to create care that is responsive to you and where you are in your healing journey.

Deeply Experienced Care

Experience matters. So does the willingness to keep growing.

With more than 35 years in the mental health profession, I bring extensive clinical experience to the work we do together.

At the same time, I believe good therapy requires a willingness to remain curious, continue learning, and thoughtfully refine our understanding of healing.

I continue to invest in specialized training, consultation, and continuing education so that I can offer care that is both deeply human and grounded in current knowledge and evidence-informed practice.

My style is warm, engaged, intentional, and collaborative.

I believe you deserve to be seen as a whole person—not as a diagnosis, a symptom, or a problem to be fixed.

Care Designed for Real Life

Because life is complex. So are you.

The people and families I work with are often thoughtful, capable individuals who have learned how to carry a great deal.

Sometimes, in the process of caring for others, meeting expectations, surviving difficult experiences, or simply getting through life, they have lost touch with themselves.

Therapy can create space to pause.

To listen.

To understand.

To reconnect with the parts of yourself that may have been set aside.

Whether we are working with an individual, a couple, a child, or a family, we make room for the complexity of real life rather than reducing it to simple explanations or quick solutions.

At Heart Rooted Counseling, healing is not about becoming someone different.

It is about becoming more deeply rooted in who you are.

A primarily self-pay practice, with limited Medicaid availability

While Heart Rooted Counseling is primarily a self-pay practice, I continue to accept Medicaid for a limited portion of my practice.

This is an intentional part of how I have chosen to structure Heart Rooted Counseling. I value being able to make space for individuals and families who may not have the option to access therapy privately, while also maintaining a practice that allows for the depth, flexibility, and individualized care that is central to my work.

Medicaid availability is limited and may vary depending on current openings and clinical fit.

What self-pay allows

  • Individualized care – Your therapy can be shaped around your unique experiences, relationships, strengths, and goals rather than fitting into a predetermined treatment model.
  • Depth and flexibility – We can give attention to the areas that matter most, allowing therapy to unfold thoughtfully rather than being driven primarily by questions of diagnosis, medical necessity, or predetermined timelines.
  • Greater choice and privacy – Self-pay gives you greater control over whether you choose to submit your mental health treatment to an insurance company. You are able to make that decision based on what feels right for you.
  • A thoughtful pace – Healing is not always linear. Our work can have room for the natural process of exploring, understanding, integrating, and creating change.
  • A relationship-centered approach – I believe the therapeutic relationship itself is an important part of healing. Self-pay allows me to protect time and energy for the people I serve rather than building a high-volume practice around insurance requirements.
  • An investment in yourself – I recognize that choosing private-pay therapy is an investment. For many people, that investment represents more than an hour of conversation. It is an intentional decision to devote time, attention, and resources toward greater self-understanding, healthier relationships, emotional well-being, and a more authentic way of living. At Heart Rooted Counseling, I want therapy to be a place where you can slow down, feel genuinely seen, explore what is beneath the surface, and discover what it means to become more deeply rooted in yourself. This is the kind of care I have chosen to create—and the kind of care I believe is worth protecting.

Many insurance plans include out-of-network benefits that may reimburse you for a portion of the cost of therapy or other services. Because benefits vary widely by plan, we encourage you to contact your insurance company directly to understand what your specific plan covers. We can also provide the documentation (a superbill) you’ll need to submit for reimbursement. If approved, your insurer will mail you a check.

A gentle, neuroscience-informed approach that works with the brain’s earliest response to overwhelming experiences and relational disruption.

DARTT & HOCI

A developmental and relational approach that explores the roots of emotional patterns, attachment wounds, boundaries, authenticity, and self-worth.

Neurofeedback

Personalized brain training that can complement therapy and support regulation, focus, sleep, and overall brain functioning.
